First Annual Teen Fest

Teen Talent Extreme
By Mauricio Segura

The Historic Bal Theater in San Leandro was the site of the First Annual Bay Teens Talent Fest. Your's truly was asked to be one of the judges alongside Juan Escovedo, yes the one from the famous and talented Escovedo family, as well as local publicist Aja Cooper.

The evening was electrically charged with music, dance, lights, and comedy. Scat tv's Blake Spears and De'Jon Butcher emceed the event with their colorful humor. But it was when their alter persona's of Granny B and Cousin Otis hit the stage, that the laughter brought down the house!

Over 12 talented teens performed a variety of acts to the delight of the crowd. Each one amazing in their own right. Periodically, special guests like TPE & Slz ASB Mob brought the audience to their feet with amazing hip hop dance moves while Wanda Goree's soulful gospel sounds mesmerized the house with her A Capella version of “His Eye Is On The Sparrow.”

A pair of Vanguard awards were given to Sophmore Carolina Navarro-Gutierrez and Senior Osa Aihie, both from San Leandro High School. Carolina, an author, won the national gold medal from the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards for her novel entitled, “A String Of Happy Memories”, and Osa took first place in a speech competition sponsored by the Rotary Club. He won the $1000 cash prize for his speech focusing that improving humanity starts with helping young people whenever and wherever possible.

Needless to say, it was a fun time from beginning to end. All the performers were invited back on stage before the winners were announced for a highly entertaining 90's musical tribute. Then the moment of truth was upon each teen as the evening's winners were finally announced. Singer Nicole Gabel grabbed third place, Karla Z. & Jessica A. took second with their masterful ballet style, and Pablo Gonzalez took first place more for his stage presence than anything else, as his extravagant showmanship was just a delight to watch!
